SAE J1171 (old J1171) means that marine parts with this number on them are built to comply with United States Coast Guard specifications dedicated exclusively for marine and boat use. If your flame arrester, ignition distributor, fuel pump, carburetor, starter motor, and alternator all do not have this label on them, your insurance company likely won't pay off in the event of any claim. Your claim doesn't even have to be related to any of these items, such as if you leave your drain plug out while launching and your insurrer finds out you are running automotive parts during their inspection of your half drowned boat, they likely won't cover your claim. The other thing is, you're liable to be in for a big fine if your towing company or the USCG finds out!
